I dreaded reading this book, fearing that as a book written by a Nobel Prize Winner it would be extremly boring. It wasn’t! It was different from any book I would have picked myself since I mostly go for action and adventure in sci-fi and fantasy novels. It did however tell a compelling story.

This book told the rather tragic tale of a couple who drifted apart from one an other and in a sense from their own selves as well. As the story progresses we get to learn more about their past as well as how they cope, or doesn’t cope, with current events and their situation. In parts it shows us how adaptable we humans are, how we can endure hopeless/meaningless circumstances out of habit or rather how we resign to circumstance and accept it; good and bad. It also shows how a familiarity can alter a relationship, how it can erode dislike and replace it with acceptance and to some degree friendship.

I won’t tell you what happens or how the story ends. If you want to know then read it for yourself! If your looking for some light reading you should probably find another book but that does in no way mean that this is a difficult book to read or comprehend. The story is fairly easy to follow and after you get a feel for the authors way with words the characters come to life and it gives the story some weight. I doubt that I’ll read this book again but I am glad that I had read it.
