Yet another book by Mary Renault about ancient Greece. This time we have left the mythological era and moved on to “modern” civilization. The main character in this book is an actor named Nikeratos. We get to follow him as he moves through the theatrical hierarchy becoming a prize winning tragic actor. But his acting is just a backdrop to the real story about Plato, Dion and Dionysios of Syracuse.

Once again Mary Renault bases her story on Greek history but this time mythology is less prevalent although the characters religious believes are important and affect how the live their lives. Nikeratos comes into contact with Dion, a pupil of Plato and one of few trusted advisors to Dionysios of Syracuse. Through out the book we follow this relationship which turns out to be an interesting story. Why? Well, it all boils down to politics, intrigue, mistrust and lofty ideals.

Plato and his friends are shaping Dion to be the perfect enlightened leader whos democratic rule will be based on philosophy. He is believed to be the natural successor to Dionysios since Dionysios son isn’t up to the task. Naturally things take a turn for the worse and Nikeratos is smack in the middle of it telling the story. I won’t tell you what happens or how it ends but if your interested in greek history and the life of the greek philosophers this book is worth reading. Of course if you are a fan of greek history and greek philosophers you already know what will happen but it’s still worth reading.

Something to say?
